I'm happy to report that there are some nice compact fluorescent bulbs available now that don't hum and do give a pleasant light, unlike the ones I mentioned previously. They even come in the shape of "regular" (some day that will be "old-fashioned") light bulbs, so can easily fit where an incandescent fits. I took pictures of the lamp in our front hall with a 60W incandescent and a new 23W (100W equivalent) soft-white n:vision fluorescent, and of my office with a 40W bulb overhead, the replacement 23W fluorescent, which you can see below. The fluorescent light is brighter than the 60W (as it should be, since it's marked 100W equivalent), and not the harsh light that previous compact fluorescents I've tried have had. It comes in 3 types: soft white (pictured here), bright white and daylight -- I'm sticking with the soft white ones. They're around $4 apiece at Home Depot. I'm very happy to have found bulbs that use 1/3 the energy, provide a brighter light, and last for 10,000 hours. I'll never look back!

There are some issues with using compact fluorescent bulbs which you should be aware of, such as proper disposal methods (if one breaks, as they contain about 5mg of mercury). Other issues such as UV radiation and a very good overview of compact fluorescents are presented at KnoxViews.

Why Fluorescents?
The chart below, which I found at the MG&E site, shows how much bang you get for the buck for various types of bulbs:

Obviously, incandescent bulbs, which most of us still use primarily, are the most inferior in terms of light produced per watt expended. I wrote previously on this page that I much prefer the light from an incandescent to that from a compact fluorescent, but have since found the bulbs mentioned above and am glad to report that that's no longer true.
