Zipcar allows you to pick up a car (or pickup truck! in some places) to use for several hours or days at locations which are convenient to public transportation. If you're 21 or older and have a driver's license, you can fill out their online application, and receive a Zipcard in the mail within a week. Then you're able to reserve a car any time either online or over the phone.
The chart above shows the cars that are available at each metro station as of Jan 18, 2008. There are 5 more available than there were last year, which is a good sign.
Your Zipcard will only open the car you've reserved during the time you've reserved it (which means no one else can open your Zipcar during that time, either). Walk to the car, hold your card to the windshield and the doors will unlock. Gas, reserved parking and insurance (a deductible may apply if you get in an accident) are all included. Just bring your Zipcar back when you're done and park it in the same reserved parking spot.
