Printer Cartridges
One of the easiest things to recycle is printer cartridges. Refill Tech on Rockville Pike will refill your cartridges in about an hour.
I've also recycled laser printer cartridges with LaserScript, a Columbia-based company who will pick up your used printer cartridges (see their website to find which ones) and deliver newly refurbished ones at the same time, with no pickup/delivery charge.
Diapers
I was poking around on the web the other day trying to find out what this generation of baby-makers is doing in regards to diapers, wondering what, if anything, has changed in the past 20 years since we used to wait for the big pink NuDyPer truck to come by and cart away our diapers for laundering. (I can't find any reference to them online now, though I did see a service called Pampered Bottom in Gaithersburg, phone 301-921-2229).
The best thing I found was an interesting entry in Rockville resident David Kearns' blog, in which he mentions that he and his wife decided to try gDiapers,
which use a flushable insert together with a snap-in liner and a pair of reusable stylin 'little g' pants. The insert can be flushed away or composted (they have a video showing how it breaks down in under 6 months, as opposed to disposables, which stay around for about 500 years). Sounds like a perfect solution -- I'll check back to see what David and Yaty have to say after using them for a few months.
The Montgomery County "Use It Again" database
The Montgomery County website has a useful searchable "Use It Again" database, where you can find places to repair, buy used, donate or rent any of a number of items, from bicycles and batteries to exercise equipment and musical instruments.
AA and AAA Batteries
Posted April 14, 2007
We've found rechargeable batteries to be well worth the extra initial price (quickly made back). We have 3 rechargers and a whole slew of rechargeable Ni-MH batteries, which we got at the Radio Shack on Hungerford Dr and the one farther down the Pike. Everyone keeps a recharger in their room, sticking in old batteries whenever needed from clocks, calculators, cameras, etc to recharge them. This seems to work best for AA and AAA batteries -- we haven't had such great success with C and D batteries. Rechargeable C's seem to run out more quickly than non-rechargeables, and the D's we couldn't get to recharge at all. Maybe a different recharger is in order.
Products to make recycling easier
The Container Store has several products that make it easier to recycle, including containers for storing used plastic bags (which you can return to grocery stores that accept and recycle them, like Giant and Magruders), twine for tying newspapers or branches, and undersink pullout drawers to hold recycled paper.
