Yesterday, I went to one of the Rockville Science Center group's biweekly operations planning meetings to catch up on what's going on with them and was glad to find them thriving. From left to right, these are Helia Hadavi, Operations Coordinator; Julia Lee, Director of Development; Dr. Phillip Justus, Trustee and Director of the Explorations! program; Tim Fahey, in charge of Marketing and Communications; and Bob Ekman, longtime Trustee President of Rockville Science Center, Inc as well as well as a host of other tech-related ventures in Rockville including the Rockville Community Network, several area middle- and high-school robotics groups, and the annual Rockville Science Day at Montgomery College.
Another equally active group of people -- including Ruth Hanessian, owner of Animal Exchange
, and Phyllis Marcuccio, former mayor of Rockville -- have been running the very successful monthly Rockville Science Cafe at Branded '72
, about to start its fifth year. Branching out from that success, the Rockville Science Center has begun two similar efforts: a Science Cafe for students at Universities at Shady Grove, and a monthly "Science Tuesday" at the Rockville Senior Center.
Included in its efforts to promote interest in science and create a permanent science center in Rockville, Rockville Science Center, Inc organizes the annual Rockville Science Day (April 6, 2014 at Montgomery College) and sponsors an award for Excellence in Communication of Science at the Montgomery County Science Fair
(March 14-15, 2014 in Silver Spring). The explorations group, headed by Dr. Justus, a geologist, organizes a variety of outdoor expeditions and field trips, including a guided tour of NIH on December 20 (full, but stay tuned for others later) and a tour of the LEED-certified Tower Oaks Building and Science Center at Montgomery College on January 10.
Volunteers interested in contributing their time to science in the Rockville area are always welcome. Immediate needs include judges for upcoming robotics competitions on January 12 and January 25, Montgomery County Science Fair judges for the Excellence in Communication of Science Award sponsored by the Rockville Science Center on March 15.
